Can You Remove Freckles? What Patients in Belfast Need to Know

Freckles are often described as “sun-kissed.”But for many patients, they represent uneven pigmentation, sun damage and skin that no longer looks uniform.

The most common question we hear is:

Can freckles actually be removed?

The answer depends on the type of freckle — and understanding that distinction is essential.

What Are Freckles?

There are two main types:

Ephelides (true freckles)

  • Usually appear in childhood

  • Darken with sun exposure

  • Fade in winter

  • Caused by genetic predisposition

Solar lentigines (sun spots)

  • Develop over time

  • Do not fade seasonally

  • Linked to cumulative UV damage

  • Often appear in adulthood

Most adults seeking treatment are referring to solar lentigines rather than true childhood freckles.

These are a marker of photoageing.

How Light-Based Treatment Works on Pigmentation

Pigmented lesions contain melanin.

BroadBand Light (BBL) technology delivers specific wavelengths absorbed by melanin. This causes:

  • Controlled heating of the pigment

  • Fragmentation of melanin clusters

  • Gradual clearance by the body

Following treatment, pigment may temporarily darken before flaking away or fading over 1–3 weeks.

This is a normal response.

Are Freckles Permanently Removed?

Existing pigment can be treated effectively.

However, new pigmentation can form with continued UV exposure.

Maintenance is important and includes:

  • Daily SPF

  • Structured treatment courses

  • Periodic maintenance sessions

Pigmentation management is ongoing — not a one-off solution.

Why Device Quality Matters

At Laser & Skin Belfast, we use BBL HEROic developed by Sciton.

Not all IPL devices are equal.

BBL allows:

  • Custom wavelength selection

  • Controlled energy delivery

  • Precise pigment targeting

  • Integrated cooling for skin safety

This matters when treating delicate facial areas.
