Advanced Laser & Light Treatments for Redness, Pigmentation, Acne & Sun Damage

Clearer, more even-looking skin with advanced medical-grade light technology. We treat concerns including facial redness and rosacea, broken vessels, pigmentation, sun damage and acne with personalised treatment plans at our Belfast skin clinic.

As the first clinic in Northern Ireland to introduce BBL HEROic, years before it became available elsewhere locally, Laser & Skin Belfast is Northern Ireland’s most experienced clinic in delivering BBL HEROic treatments.

What Can We Treat?

Our treatments don't simply target the surface appearance of the skin. Using advanced medical-grade light technology, we can select specific wavelengths of light to target different structures within the skin — from excess pigment and visible blood vessels to the bacteria and inflammation associated with acne.

This means treatment can be adapted to what we actually see in your skin, rather than using the same settings or protocol for every patient.

Acne is more complex than simply having spots. Active acne can involve excess oil production, blocked pores, acne-causing bacteria and inflammation, while repeated breakouts can leave behind persistent redness and pigmentation long after the spot itself has disappeared.

Our acne treatments use different wavelengths of medical-grade light to tackle several of these problems.

Blue light targets Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria associated with inflammatory acne. When the bacteria absorb the light, naturally occurring compounds within them react and create an antibacterial effect, helping to reduce the bacterial load within the skin.

We can then use additional wavelengths to target the redness and inflammation surrounding active spots, as well as the persistent red or pigmented marks that can remain following previous breakouts.

This allows us to treat more than the spot you can see on the surface. For someone experiencing active breakouts alongside redness and post-acne marks, treatment can be adapted to address several elements of their acne during the same course.

The aim is fewer active breakouts, less inflammation and redness, and a clearer, calmer and more even-looking complexion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can light-based skin treatments help with?

Treatment can be used for a range of common skin concerns, including facial redness, rosacea, visible blood vessels, pigmentation, sun damage, uneven skin tone and active acne.

Your treatment will be tailored to your individual skin concerns rather than using the same settings or approach for every patient.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed depends on what we are treating, the severity of the concern and how your skin responds.

Some people notice an improvement following one treatment, while concerns such as rosacea, pigmentation or acne may benefit from a course of treatments followed by occasional maintenance.

We will discuss the recommended treatment plan with you following assessment of your skin.

Do I need to avoid the sun before treatment?

Yes. You should have no tanning activity or significant UV exposure for 4 weeks before your treatment.

This means avoiding sunbathing, tanning beds and significant sun exposure that could stimulate a tan. It does not mean you need to have pale or untanned-looking skin to be treated.

If your natural skin tone is darker, or you retain colour from previous sun exposure, this does not automatically prevent treatment once the required period without tanning activity has passed.

Can I use fake tan before treatment?

Please avoid fake tan and gradual tanning products for 2 weeks before your appointment.

The treatment area needs to be completely free from self-tanning products when you attend.

Can I go on holiday after a laser treatment?

Yes. You should avoid significant sun exposure for 2 weeks after your treatment, so we recommend leaving at least two weeks between your appointment and a sunny holiday.

After this period, you can go on holiday as normal, although good sun protection is important to protect your skin and the results of your treatment.

If you have holidays planned, let us know and we can help you schedule your appointments around them.

Does the treatment hurt?

Most people tolerate treatment well. You may feel a brief warm or snapping sensation as the light is delivered, with certain areas of the face being more sensitive than others.

The intensity of treatment can vary depending on the concern being treated and the settings required.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime depends on the treatment being performed and your individual skin response.

Redness and warmth can occur immediately afterwards and usually settle relatively quickly. When treating pigmentation, areas of pigment can temporarily become darker before gradually fading or flaking away.

We will explain what you can expect before your treatment and provide appropriate aftercare advice.

How quickly will I see results?

This depends on the condition being treated.

Pigmentation may initially darken before gradually becoming less noticeable. Redness and visible vessels can improve progressively following treatment, while acne treatment usually requires a course rather than relying on a single session.

Skin can continue to change in the weeks following treatment.

Is the treatment suitable for everyone?

No. Light-based treatments are not suitable for every skin type, medical condition or medication.

Before treatment, we will assess your skin, discuss relevant medical history and medications and determine whether treatment is appropriate for you.

In some circumstances we may recommend a different treatment instead.

Do I need a consultation and patch test?

A consultation allows us to assess your skin and determine what is causing the concern you would like treated. This is particularly important because redness, pigmentation and acne can have different causes and do not always require the same treatment.

Where required, a patch test will be carried out before treatment so we can assess your skin's response and select appropriate treatment settings.

What should I avoid before my appointment?

Before treatment, you should avoid tanning and significant sun exposure and follow any skincare or medication instructions provided during your consultation.

Please let us know about any changes to your health, medication or skincare since your consultation, particularly medications or products that may increase sensitivity to light.

If you are unsure whether something you are using will affect your treatment, contact the clinic before your appointment rather than stopping prescribed medication without medical advice.
