Dark Circles Under Eyes: Pigmentation, Allergies, Thin Skin or Rubbing?

Dark circles are one of the most common concerns clients ask us about at Laser & Skin Belfast, but they are not all caused by the same thing. This is why one person may benefit from a skin booster such as Sunekos, while another may be better suited to a targeted peel such as the ME Line Dark Circles Peel.

The key is understanding what type of dark circle you have.

What causes dark circles?

Dark circles can be caused by several different factors, including pigmentation, thin skin, hollowing, poor skin quality, allergies, rubbing the eyes, lifestyle factors and genetics.

In many cases, there is more than one cause happening at the same time.

Pigmented dark circles

Some dark circles are caused by excess pigment in the skin. This can look like brown, grey or shadowy discolouration under the eyes.

Pigmentation may be more common in darker skin types or in people who are prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation. It can also be worsened by sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation or repeated rubbing of the delicate under-eye area.

For this type of dark circle, a treatment such as the ME Line Dark Circles Peel may be more suitable. This is designed to target pigmentation and improve the appearance of darker discolouration around the eye area.

Dark circles from allergies and rubbing

Allergies can make the under-eye area look darker because they can cause inflammation, puffiness, congestion and repeated rubbing of the skin.

When the skin is rubbed frequently, it can become irritated and darker over time, especially in skin types that are prone to pigmentation. This is sometimes why clients notice their dark circles look worse during allergy flare-ups or hay fever season.

Some people also develop what is sometimes referred to as “allergic shiners”, where congestion and inflammation around the sinus area can make the under-eye area appear darker or more shadowed.

In these cases, it is important to manage the underlying irritation as well as choosing the right skin treatment. If the skin is still being rubbed or inflamed regularly, pigmentation can be harder to improve.

Dark circles from thin skin

Some dark circles are not mainly caused by pigment. They are caused by thin, delicate skin under the eyes, where the underlying blood vessels and shadowing show through more easily.

This can make the area look blue, purple, grey or tired, even if there is not much actual pigmentation in the skin.

Thin under-eye skin may become more noticeable with age as collagen levels reduce and the skin becomes more delicate.

For this type of dark circle, Sunekos may be a better option. Sunekos is an injectable skin booster designed to improve skin quality, hydration, elasticity and firmness. It can be particularly useful when the under-eye area looks crepey, thin or tired.

Hollow under eyes and shadowing

Some people believe they have dark circles when the concern is actually hollowing or volume loss under the eyes.

When light hits the tear trough area, hollowness can create shadows that make the under-eye area appear darker and more tired.

This is why it is important to assess whether the concern is:

  • Pigmentation

  • Thin skin

  • Hollowing

  • Vascular show-through

  • Allergies and inflammation

  • Or a combination of factors

Sunekos vs ME Line Dark Circles Peel

Sunekos and the ME Line Dark Circles Peel are very different treatments.

Sunekos is usually chosen when the concern is thin, crepey or poor-quality skin under the eyes. It helps support the skin and improve the appearance of tired-looking under eyes.

ME Line Dark Circles Peel is usually chosen when the main concern is pigmentation or darker discolouration in the skin itself.

At Laser & Skin Belfast, we assess the under-eye area properly before recommending treatment, because choosing the wrong treatment can lead to disappointing results.

How do I know which treatment I need?

A consultation is the best way to understand what is causing your dark circles. We will look at the colour, skin thickness, texture, pigmentation pattern, lifestyle factors and whether allergies or rubbing may be contributing.

Some clients may need Sunekos. Some may need a pigmentation-focused peel. Some may need a combination approach over time.
