What Can We Treat?
CO₂ laser can be tailored from light resurfacing through to advanced corrective treatments, allowing us to treat a wide range of concerns across the face, eyes, neck and body.
Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty
Significant tightening. No surgery.
CO₂ can be used to resurface and significantly tighten loose, crepey and folded skin around the eyes.
The treatment combines controlled resurfacing with immediate collagen contraction and progressive collagen remodelling, improving both laxity and the quality of ageing eyelid skin.
✓ Loose upper-eyelid skin
✓ Hooded or folded-looking skin
✓ Crepey eyelids
✓ Crow's feet
✓ Lower-eye wrinkles
✓ Fine and deeper lines
Downtime: around 5–10 days
The eye area is particularly prone to swelling, so the first few days can look quite dramatic. Swelling, redness, crusting and flaking gradually settle as the skin heals, while tightening continues to develop over the following weeks and months.

CO₂ Laser Resurfacing FAQs
What is CO₂ laser resurfacing?
CO₂ laser resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment that uses a 10,600 nm wavelength to remove microscopic areas of damaged skin while creating controlled heat within the surrounding tissue.
This combination of resurfacing, collagen contraction and subsequent collagen remodelling allows CO₂ to improve lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, acne scarring, sun damage, pigmentation, enlarged pores, crepey skin and uneven texture.
Modern fractional CO₂ allows us to treat microscopic areas of the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact, providing powerful resurfacing with considerably faster healing than traditional full-field CO₂ treatments.
What is fractional CO₂ laser?
Fractional CO₂ delivers laser energy into thousands of microscopic treatment zones rather than removing the entire surface of the skin.
The surrounding untreated tissue helps the skin repair itself considerably faster.
This means we can perform genuine ablative CO₂ resurfacing and stimulate significant collagen remodelling without the prolonged recovery historically associated with traditional full-field CO₂ resurfacing.
Treatment intensity can also be adjusted considerably — from low-downtime CoolPeel® through to advanced corrective fractional CO₂.
What can CO₂ laser treat?
CO₂ laser can be used to improve:
Fine lines • Deeper wrinkles • Skin laxity • Crepey skin • Smoker's lines • Acne scarring • Enlarged pores • Uneven texture • Sun damage • Some pigmentation • Ageing around the eyes • Neck ageing • Photodamaged skin
It can also be used to resurface and tighten selected areas of the body, including the abdomen, upper arms, above the knees, chest, décolletage and hands.
Can CO₂ laser remove wrinkles?
CO₂ laser resurfacing can produce a very substantial improvement in lines and wrinkles.
Some fine and superficial lines may appear to disappear following treatment.
For deeper, established or etched-in wrinkles, treatment can be performed at a higher intensity to create greater ablation, thermal stimulation and collagen remodelling.
Depending on the depth of the wrinkles, treatment intensity and individual response, advanced fractional CO₂ can produce a substantial reduction in the depth and appearance of deeper, established wrinkles.
Does CO₂ laser tighten loose skin?
Yes. CO₂ doesn't simply resurface the skin.
The controlled thermal effect causes existing collagen to contract, while the subsequent healing response stimulates new collagen production and remodelling.
For suitable patients this can result in a significant visible improvement in loose, lax and crepey skin, alongside improvement in wrinkles and skin texture.
The degree of tightening depends on the area being treated, skin quality, degree of laxity, treatment intensity and individual response.
Is CO₂ good for smoker's lines and wrinkles around the mouth?
Yes. The perioral area is one of the areas where advanced CO₂ resurfacing can be particularly useful.
Vertical lip lines and the thin, crepey skin surrounding the mouth can be notoriously difficult to treat. Although commonly called “smoker's lines”, you certainly don't need to have smoked to develop them.
Rather than simply adding volume beneath the wrinkle, CO₂ allows us to resurface the ageing skin itself while stimulating collagen contraction and remodelling.
This can substantially reduce the appearance of vertical lip lines, improve crepey skin and soften deeper, etched-in wrinkles around the mouth.
Can CO₂ laser treat loose or hooded eyelid skin?
Yes. CO₂ can be used for Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty, targeting loose, crepey, wrinkled or folded-looking skin around the upper and lower eyelids.
The treatment combines controlled resurfacing with collagen contraction and subsequent remodelling.
For suitable patients this can produce significant visible tightening and contraction of the skin around the eyes, alongside improvement in crow's feet, crepiness and eyelid wrinkles.
Is CO₂ Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty the same as surgical blepharoplasty?
No. They are different procedures.
Surgical blepharoplasty is an operation involving surgical alteration of the eyelid tissues.
CO₂ Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty instead uses laser resurfacing, thermal contraction and subsequent collagen remodelling to tighten and improve ageing eyelid skin without surgical incisions.
Suitability depends on your individual anatomy, concerns and the result you want to achieve.
How much downtime is there after CO₂ Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty?
You should generally allow approximately 5–10 days of visible recovery.
The eye area is particularly prone to swelling because the tissue around the eyes is extremely delicate. Swelling and puffiness can therefore be considerably more noticeable around the eyelids than following CO₂ treatment elsewhere on the face, particularly during the first few days.
You may also experience redness, tightness, mild oozing, crusting, dryness and flaking while the skin heals.
The eye area can look quite dramatic initially and may look worse before it looks better. This initial healing period is separate from the final result — collagen remodelling and tightening continue to develop over the following weeks and months.
Can CO₂ laser tighten the neck?
Yes. Fractional CO₂ can be used to improve loose and crepey neck skin, wrinkles, horizontal lines, loss of firmness, texture and photodamage.
The treatment addresses both the surface appearance of ageing skin and the underlying loss of collagen by combining resurfacing with controlled thermal stimulation.
Treatment settings are selected specifically for the neck because this area heals differently from facial skin.
CONTINUED Can CO₂ laser tighten loose skin on the body? Yes. Fractional CO₂ isn't limited to the face. It can be used on selected areas of loose, wrinkled, crepey or photodamaged body skin, including: Abdomen & tummy • Upper arms • Above the knees • Chest & décolletage • Hands The treatment resurfaces damaged skin while stimulating collagen contraction and remodelling, with the aim of creating firmer, tighter and smoother-looking skin. The treatment plan and number of sessions required will depend on the area, degree of laxity, skin quality and desired result. Does CO₂ laser treat acne scars? Yes. Fractional CO₂ is widely used for acne scarring. The laser creates controlled microscopic treatment zones within scarred skin, triggering an intensive healing response and subsequent collagen remodelling. This can reduce the depth and visibility of acne scars, soften defined scar edges and significantly improve pitted or uneven skin texture. More established or complex scarring may require multiple treatments or a combination treatment approach. Can CO₂ laser improve pigmentation and sun damage? Yes. CO₂ resurfacing can improve some forms of pigmentation, mottled sun damage and uneven skin tone. CO₂ doesn't target melanin in exactly the same way as a dedicated pigment laser or IPL. Instead, microscopic areas of photodamaged epidermal tissue are removed during the resurfacing process. This makes CO₂ particularly useful when pigmentation occurs alongside wrinkles, rough texture, enlarged pores and other signs of photoageing. Not every form of pigmentation should be treated with CO₂, so we will assess the pigmentation before recommending treatment. What is CoolPeel®? CoolPeel is a fractional CO₂ laser treatment designed to provide genuine superficial CO₂ resurfacing with minimal downtime. It uses the same 10,600 nm CO₂ wavelength, but delivers the energy in extremely short, controlled pulses designed to create superficial fractional ablation while limiting unnecessary residual heat within the surrounding tissue. This makes CoolPeel particularly attractive for clients wanting to improve fine lines, pores, texture, early sun damage and overall skin quality without the recovery associated with a more aggressive CO₂ treatment. What's the difference between CoolPeel® and advanced fractional CO₂? They're both CO₂ treatments. The difference is how much tissue effect we deliberately create. CoolPeel sits at the lighter end of the spectrum, providing superficial fractional resurfacing with minimal downtime. Corrective and advanced fractional CO₂ treatments use greater treatment intensity to create a stronger ablative and thermal effect. This allows us to target concerns such as deeper wrinkles, established acne scarring and more significant skin laxity, but involves greater recovery. The advantage of having this range is that treatment can be matched to both the result you want and the amount of downtime you're prepared to have. Will I see results after one CoolPeel®? Yes. Improvement can be seen following a single CoolPeel treatment. You do not have to commit to a course of CoolPeel simply to benefit from the treatment. However, CoolPeel results are cumulative. Each treatment builds on the improvements created by previous treatments as the skin continues to renew and remodel. This means CoolPeel can be used either as a standalone treatment for skin refreshment or as a series of treatments where greater progressive correction is wanted without the downtime of a more aggressive CO₂ session. Do I need a course of CoolPeel®? Not necessarily. If you want a relatively light refresh, improvement can be achieved following a single CoolPeel. However, if you want more significant results but don't want the 7–10 days of visible recovery that can accompany stronger CO₂ resurfacing, a course of CoolPeel treatments can offer another approach. Because CoolPeel results are cumulative, each treatment progressively builds on the previous one. For some concerns, a series of CoolPeel treatments can therefore build towards a similar level of improvement to a stronger resurfacing treatment, while keeping the downtime after each individual session much shorter. Essentially, you may have the choice between: Stronger CO₂ treatment → greater correction in one session → more downtime or A series of CoolPeel® treatments → cumulative improvement → minimal downtime each time Which route is appropriate will depend on your skin, the concern being treated and the level of correction you want. How many CO₂ treatments will I need? There isn't one answer for everyone. It depends on what we're treating, the level of correction you want and how much downtime you're prepared to have. Some clients may choose a stronger fractional CO₂ treatment because they want greater correction from a single procedure and are comfortable accommodating the recovery. Others may prefer to achieve their improvement progressively with a course of cumulative CoolPeel treatments, keeping the downtime after each session minimal. Acne scarring, significant skin laxity and some body concerns may also require more than one treatment. Your treatment plan will therefore be based on the result you want rather than automatically prescribing everyone the same number of sessions. How much downtime is there after CoolPeel®? Typically around 1–2 days of noticeable downtime, although individual responses vary. Immediately afterwards, the skin may appear red and feel warm, similar to mild sunburn. Over the following day or two, the skin can develop a characteristic dry, rough or sandpaper-like texture as the microscopic treatment zones heal. The skin may continue to feel slightly rough after the initial redness has settled. It is important not to pick, scrub or exfoliate this away. Can I wear makeup after CoolPeel®? Makeup can generally be reapplied from the following day provided the skin is intact and healing normally. We will advise you individually following treatment. After stronger fractional CO₂ treatments, makeup should wait until the skin is sufficiently healed and there are no open, weeping or crusted areas. How much downtime is there after corrective fractional CO₂? Depending on treatment intensity, approximately 1–7 days. You may experience redness, warmth, swelling, bronzing, dryness, a sandpaper-like texture, flaking or peeling as the microscopic treatment zones heal. A treatment performed at the lighter end of the corrective spectrum will naturally involve less recovery than one performed more aggressively. How much downtime is there after advanced fractional CO₂? Depending on how aggressively the skin is treated, approximately 4–10 days of visible recovery may be expected. More intensive treatment can result in greater swelling and redness followed by bronzing, crusting, peeling and flaking as the skin heals. Importantly, advanced fractional CO₂ is not the old-fashioned full-field CO₂ treatment associated with several weeks away from work. Fractional technology treats microscopic areas while leaving surrounding tissue intact to support considerably faster healing. This allows us to perform powerful corrective resurfacing with substantially less recovery than traditional full-field CO₂. Will I need time off work? It depends on the treatment. After CoolPeel, many clients can return to their normal routine very quickly. Following corrective fractional CO₂, you may choose to take several days away from work depending on treatment intensity and how comfortable you are with visible redness or peeling. After advanced fractional CO₂, you may prefer to allow 4–10 days for visible healing. Following Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty, approximately 5–10 days should generally be allowed, particularly because swelling around the eyes can be quite noticeable during the early stages of recovery. Is CO₂ laser painful? Comfort varies according to the treatment area and intensity. CoolPeel is generally considerably easier to tolerate than a more intensive resurfacing procedure. For stronger fractional CO₂ treatments, appropriate anaesthesia and comfort measures may be used depending on the treatment being performed. We will explain what to expect before your treatment. When will I see my final CO₂ result? You'll see changes as the skin heals, but the result doesn't stop developing when the peeling finishes. CO₂ triggers collagen production and remodelling beneath the skin, and this process continues over the following weeks and months. The skin can therefore continue to become firmer, smoother and more refined long after the initial recovery period. This is also why results from repeated CoolPeel treatments can be cumulative. How long do CO₂ laser results last? The structural changes created through resurfacing and collagen remodelling can be long lasting. However, CO₂ cannot stop the natural ageing process or prevent future UV damage. Daily SPF, appropriate skincare and maintenance treatments can help protect and maintain the result. Is one stronger CO₂ treatment better than several CoolPeels? Not necessarily — they're simply different ways of approaching treatment. A stronger fractional CO₂ treatment creates a greater tissue effect in a single session and may therefore be preferable if you want more significant correction relatively quickly and are happy to accommodate the downtime. A series of CoolPeel treatments allows the results to build cumulatively, with considerably less downtime after each individual treatment. For some clients, the deciding factor isn't simply the result they want — it's how they want to achieve it. During consultation we can discuss whether you would be better suited to one stronger treatment, several lighter treatments or another treatment plan entirely. Is fractional CO₂ the same as traditional CO₂ resurfacing? No. Traditional full-field CO₂ resurfacing treated the entire skin surface and was associated with considerably longer recovery. Fractional CO₂ creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones while leaving surrounding skin intact. This allows faster healing and substantially reduced downtime, while still providing genuine ablative resurfacing and collagen remodelling. Is CO₂ laser suitable for naturally darker skin tones? Potentially, yes. Having a naturally darker or olive skin tone does not automatically mean you cannot have CO₂ laser treatment. However, the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation changes can increase in higher Fitzpatrick skin types, particularly as treatment intensity increases. Your natural skin tone, pigmentation history, response to sun exposure and the proposed treatment intensity therefore need to be assessed carefully before treatment. Can I have CO₂ laser after sun exposure or while my skin is recently tanned? CO₂ laser should not be performed on skin that is sunburned or has developed a recent tan from UV exposure or sunbeds. The important distinction is a recent change from your natural skin colour — not whether your natural complexion is light, olive or darker. Recent tanning can increase the risk of unwanted pigment changes following treatment, so we may recommend waiting until your skin has returned to its usual baseline colour before proceeding. During consultation we'll assess your natural skin tone, recent sun exposure, tanning history and pigmentation risk and advise you when it is appropriate to treat. Can CO₂ laser be performed all year round? Potentially, yes, provided sun exposure can be appropriately managed. For more intensive resurfacing, autumn and winter can be particularly convenient because avoiding strong UV exposure during recovery is easier. If treatment is performed during brighter months, careful sun avoidance and high-level sun protection are particularly important before and after treatment. Do I need a consultation before CO₂ laser? Yes. CO₂ is an ablative laser treatment, so suitability needs to be assessed before treatment. We'll discuss your skin concerns, medical history, medications, natural skin type, healing history, pigmentation risk, recent sun exposure, treatment area, desired result and the amount of downtime you're prepared to have. This allows us to recommend both the appropriate treatment and the appropriate intensity. Who may not be suitable for CO₂ laser? Suitability is assessed individually. Factors that may prevent or delay treatment can include active infection, impaired wound healing, certain skin conditions, recent significant UV exposure or tanning, some medications and particular histories of abnormal scarring or pigmentation. Your consultation allows us to identify any factors that could make treatment inappropriate or mean it should be postponed. What are the risks of CO₂ laser? Expected temporary effects can include redness, swelling, warmth, dryness, roughness, crusting, peeling, itching and sensitivity. Potential complications include infection, prolonged redness, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, delayed healing and scarring. The risk profile changes according to the treatment area, skin type and treatment intensity, which is why appropriate patient selection, treatment settings and aftercare are important. Why is CO₂ aftercare so important? Fractional ablative CO₂ temporarily disrupts the skin's protective barrier. Correct aftercare supports healing and helps reduce the risk of irritation, infection, unwanted pigmentation changes and scarring. Your aftercare will depend on where we have treated and how intensive your treatment was, so you will receive instructions specific to your procedure. Can CO₂ be combined with other laser and skin treatments? Yes, where clinically appropriate. Different technologies can target different aspects of skin ageing. For example, CO₂ may be chosen primarily for resurfacing, wrinkles, scarring and laxity, while another technology may be more appropriate for vascular redness or certain pigmentation concerns. Where a combination approach would produce a better overall result, we can build this into your treatment plan with appropriate spacing between procedures. What's the difference between CO₂ and a non-ablative laser? CO₂ is ablative. It physically removes microscopic areas of skin while simultaneously creating a controlled thermal effect. A non-ablative laser heats targeted tissue without ablating the skin surface. That ablative component is one of the reasons fractional CO₂ can create significant correction in concerns such as established wrinkles, acne scarring and damaged skin texture, but it also means there is a healing period following treatment. Which CO₂ treatment is right for me? Think of our treatments as a spectrum rather than completely separate procedures. CoolPeel® Superficial fractional CO₂ Around 1–2 days downtime Corrective Fractional CO₂ Greater resurfacing and correction Around 1–7 days downtime Advanced Fractional CO₂ More intensive corrective resurfacing Around 4–10 days downtime Non-Invasive Blepharoplasty Specialist CO₂ treatment for the eye area Around 5–10 days visible recovery And remember, you don't necessarily have to choose the strongest treatment to achieve a greater result. Because CoolPeel results are cumulative, some clients may prefer to build their result gradually through a series of lower-downtime treatments rather than having one more aggressive procedure. At consultation we'll discuss what you want to change, how significant a result you want, how quickly you want to achieve it and how much downtime you're comfortable with, then recommend the most appropriate route for you.
