How does Dermalux LED Light Therapy actually work?
Dermalux works through a process called photobiomodulation, where specific wavelengths of light penetrate the skin and are absorbed by cells, triggering biological responses rather than simply heating or resurfacing the skin.
Red 633nm and near-infrared 830nm light are absorbed by light-sensitive components within our cells, particularly within the mitochondria — the structures responsible for producing cellular energy. This can increase the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), giving cells more energy to perform processes involved in repair, regeneration and normal cellular function. These wavelengths can also influence inflammatory signalling and fibroblast activity, supporting the production of collagen and elastin.
Blue 415nm light works differently. It is absorbed by naturally occurring porphyrins produced by acne-causing C. acnes bacteria. This produces reactive oxygen species that damage the bacteria, helping to reduce the bacterial population associated with inflammatory acne.
The wavelength used therefore matters. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths and interact with different cellular targets, which is why Dermalux can select or combine blue, red and near-infrared light according to the concern being treated.
Unlike lasers or resurfacing treatments, Dermalux does not need to deliberately damage the skin to create a healing response. Instead, it uses precisely selected light wavelengths to influence cellular activity and support the skin's own biological processes.
What skin concerns can Dermalux help with?

How does Dermalux help acne?
Dermalux 415nm blue light targets C. acnes, bacteria associated with inflammatory acne. The bacteria naturally produce compounds called porphyrins which absorb blue light, triggering a reaction that damages the bacteria.
Red and near-infrared wavelengths can also be incorporated to help calm inflammation and support the skin's natural repair processes.
Can Dermalux help fine lines and wrinkles?
Yes. 633nm red and 830nm near-infrared light support cellular activity and fibroblast function, helping to support the production of collagen and elastin.
Over a course of treatments, this can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, firmness and overall skin quality.
What is collagen banking with Dermalux?

Can Dermalux help with hair loss or thinning hair?
Red and near-infrared photobiomodulation can be incorporated into scalp and hair restoration programmes. Is Dermalux dangerous?
Dermalux Flex MD is a medical device designed for professional therapeutic use and has an excellent safety profile when used correctly.
Unlike some light-based treatments, Dermalux does not rely on heating, burning or deliberately damaging tissue. Suitability is still assessed before treatment, as certain medical conditions and photosensitising medications may affect whether LED phototherapy is appropriate.
Does Dermalux hurt your eyes?
Dermalux produces extremely bright light, which is why protective eye goggles are worn during treatment and we ask you to keep your eyes closed.
When Dermalux is used correctly and the recommended eye protection is followed, treatment is designed to be delivered safely.
Can Dermalux light cause cancer?
Dermalux does not emit UV radiation, which is the radiation associated with UV-induced DNA damage and skin cancer.
It uses specific wavelengths of visible blue and red light together with near-infrared light for photobiomodulation. It therefore works very differently from tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation.
Does Dermalux use UV light?
No. Dermalux Flex MD uses 415nm blue, 633nm red and 830nm near-infrared light.
It does not use UVA or UVB radiation and should not be confused with tanning lamps or medical UV phototherapy.
Can Dermalux be used on the body?
Yes. Dermalux Flex MD can be positioned over different areas of the face and body, allowing treatment to be tailored according to the area and concern being treated.
How many Dermalux treatments will I need?
This depends on the concern being treated and your individual treatment goals.
Dermalux produces progressive and cumulative results, meaning the benefits build with repeated treatments. A course of regular sessions is therefore usually recommended when targeting a specific concern, followed by maintenance treatments where appropriate.
