HALO vs CO₂ Laser: Similar Price, Very Different Results

Oct 11
5 min read

HALO and CO₂ laser treatments often sit within a similar premium price bracket. That can make them appear to be equivalent treatments—two advanced lasers offering broadly comparable results through slightly different technology.

They are not.

HALO is a hybrid fractional treatment designed to balance improvement with a relatively manageable recovery. CO₂ is a true resurfacing laser capable of creating a much more significant change in wrinkles, pores, texture, acne scarring and visible skin damage.

The treatments may cost a similar amount, but patients are not necessarily paying for the same level of result.

What Does HALO Actually Do?

HALO combines two wavelengths:

  • A 1470 nm non-ablative wavelength that heats and coagulates tissue beneath the surface

  • A 2940 nm Er:YAG wavelength that lightly ablates the upper layers of the skin

Combining two wavelengths sounds impressive—and technologically, it is. HALO can improve pigmentation, early fine lines, pores and overall skin quality.

But the presence of two wavelengths does not automatically make it more powerful than CO₂.

HALO was specifically designed as a compromise: more corrective than a purely non-ablative laser, but without the intensity and recovery associated with stronger ablative resurfacing.

For someone wanting a general skin refresh, that may be enough. For someone paying premium prices because they want a noticeable improvement in established wrinkles, acne scarring or damaged skin texture, CO₂ offers considerably more.

CO₂ Does More Than Refresh the Skin

CO₂ laser uses a 10,600 nm wavelength to precisely remove damaged skin while producing a controlled thermal effect within the surrounding tissue.

This combination is what makes CO₂ so effective. It does not simply heat the skin or polish its uppermost layers. It creates genuine resurfacing alongside the collagen-remodelling response needed to improve more established concerns.

CO₂ can be used to treat:

  • Fine lines and deeper wrinkles

  • Acne scarring

  • Enlarged pores

  • Rough or uneven texture

  • Sun damage

  • Crepey skin

  • Lines around the mouth

  • Ageing around the eyes

  • Loss of firmness

  • Surgical and traumatic scars

Most importantly, CO₂ is not restricted to one standard treatment strength.

It can be delivered as a light CoolPeel treatment with minimal recovery, a stronger fractional treatment for more visible correction or a deep ablative procedure for patients who need the most substantial resurfacing.

HALO offers one hybrid approach. CO₂ offers an entire spectrum of resurfacing.

Two Wavelengths Do Not Automatically Produce a Better Result

Marketing around laser treatments often focuses heavily on the number of wavelengths included. It sounds logical that two wavelengths—or even three—must be better than one.

That is not how laser resurfacing works.

The result depends on what those wavelengths actually do within the skin, the depth they reach, the amount of tissue they remove and the strength of the healing response they create.

HALO combines deeper non-ablative heating with relatively superficial Er:YAG ablation. CO₂ can produce controlled ablation and thermal stimulation at a range of depths and intensities.

CO₂ does not need multiple wavelengths to prove its resurfacing ability. Its effectiveness is exactly why newer lasers are continually compared with it.

Clever technology is not the same thing as stronger treatment.

The Difference Becomes Clear With Acne Scarring

Mild textural irregularities may improve with HALO, but established acne scarring requires more than a general improvement in skin quality.

Fractional CO₂ creates controlled columns within the skin and stimulates a substantial repair and collagen-remodelling response. The depth, energy and density can be adapted according to the severity of the scarring and the result being pursued.

This gives CO₂ far greater scope for treating boxcar scars, visible atrophic scarring and uneven skin texture.

HALO may soften the appearance of mild scarring. CO₂ is capable of treating it much more assertively.

When patients are paying a similar amount for treatment, that difference matters.

What About Wrinkles and Loose, Crepey Skin?

HALO can improve early fine lines and give the skin a brighter, smoother appearance.

CO₂ goes further.

By removing damaged tissue and creating a stronger controlled thermal response, CO₂ can produce more significant collagen remodelling. This makes it particularly valuable for established lines around the eyes and mouth, crepey skin and more visible signs of ageing.

The intensity can be adjusted according to the area being treated. A patient wanting a lighter refresh does not need to undergo an aggressive procedure, but the option to treat more deeply is there when required.

With HALO, the treatment is built around maintaining a balance between results and reduced downtime. With CO₂, the treatment can be built around the result the patient actually wants.

CoolPeel Changes the Downtime Argument

One of HALO’s biggest selling points has always been that it offers resurfacing without the recovery associated with traditional CO₂.

CoolPeel has changed that conversation.

CoolPeel delivers genuine fractional CO₂ resurfacing using very short pulses of energy. It creates microscopic areas of ablation while limiting unnecessary residual heat in the surrounding skin.

This allows patients to access the benefits of CO₂ with a far more manageable recovery than older, aggressive resurfacing treatments.

Patients may experience redness, warmth, dryness and a rough skin texture, but a light CoolPeel treatment does not automatically mean weeks of hiding away.

That removes one of the main reasons someone might previously have chosen HALO over CO₂.

Less Downtime Is Only Better if the Result Is Enough

Downtime is important, but it should never be considered in isolation.

A very light treatment with a short recovery is not necessarily better value if it fails to create the level of improvement the patient expected. Paying for repeated gentle treatments can also become considerably more expensive over time.

The real question is not simply, “Which treatment has less downtime?”

It is: “What level of improvement is realistic for the money being spent?”

HALO is deliberately limited enough to keep recovery manageable. CO₂ can also be delivered lightly, but it has the additional ability to move into genuinely corrective resurfacing.

That makes CO₂ the more versatile investment.

Why CO₂ Remains the Gold Standard

CO₂ has remained the benchmark for skin resurfacing because it can do what many other devices are attempting to replicate: precisely remove damaged tissue while creating a powerful collagen-remodelling response.

It can be tailored to the patient rather than forcing every patient into the same treatment level.

A younger patient with early lines and visible pores may choose CoolPeel. Someone with established sun damage or deeper wrinkles may require stronger fractional resurfacing. A patient with significant acne scarring may need a more intensive corrective treatment.

All of those treatments can be delivered using CO₂ technology.

HALO cannot offer that same breadth or intensity.

Why CO₂ Was Chosen for Laser & Skin Belfast

CO₂ was chosen because the clinic wanted to offer a treatment capable of creating more than a temporary glow or subtle refresh.

Patients investing in laser resurfacing are often looking for a genuine change in the quality of their skin. They want lines softened, pores reduced, texture improved and scarring treated—not simply skin that looks slightly brighter for a while.

CO₂ provides the flexibility to deliver a light treatment when minimal downtime is important and a much stronger treatment when meaningful correction is the priority.

That range is the reason CO₂ was chosen over a laser limited to one style of hybrid resurfacing.

HALO vs CO₂: The Honest Verdict

HALO is an advanced hybrid laser, but it is not equivalent to the full resurfacing capability of CO₂.

HALO combines superficial ablation with non-ablative heating to create improvement while controlling downtime. CO₂ can deliver light resurfacing, deep fractional correction and advanced ablative treatment using one highly adaptable technology.

The treatments may be advertised at similar prices, but the possible end results are not the same.

For someone wanting a gentle refresh, HALO may create an improvement. For someone investing in treatment because they want a significant change in wrinkles, acne scarring, pores, texture or visible skin damage, CO₂ is the more powerful and capable choice.

That is why CO₂ remains the gold standard.
